The exterior finishes on this home include vinyl cedar shakes to add to the dimension of the house. The home also has wide trim on the corners and at all windows and doors adding distinction and a multitude of focal points on this home. When building a modular home you have a multitude of exterior finishes to select.

Vinyl Siding

The standard siding offered by modular home manufactures is vinyl siding. Vinyl is easy to install and is available in many different styles and colors that replicate wood the appearance of siding.

There are advantages to siding and finishing your modular home with vinyl siding and trim upgrades. There are also some cons to vinyl siding, one being resale value of your home.

Wood Siding

The warm appearance of wood enhances a home's curb appeal. Modular home factories rarely offer clap board wood siding on homes. Factories do install T-111 exterior sheathing on modules for chalets, cabins and cottages.

Wood is the most traditional siding to place on a new home. Wood siding is often required in neighborhoods with demanding home owners associations. If wood siding is properly installed and a rain screen system is used for the siding, painting wood siding can be limited to every ten years.

Brick Cladding

My favorite finish for the exterior of a home is brick. Brick provides a modular home with a timeless and attractive exterior. Brick can be used on colonials, craftsmen style homes and any style of home in the United States. Today brick can be applied as a veneer to appear as laid brick or installed on the brick ledge of your foundation.

Brick is the most costly exterior finishes to install on a modular home, but it is truly a forever siding. Often people will install brick siding only on the front of the home or at focal areas of the home. Personally, I love my all brick home.

Stone

Stone is very similar in price as a brick exterior finishes. Stone finishes can be either natural stone that is sliced to be adhered to the exterior of a home or man made using colored cement from realistic stone molds.

A section of the home clad with stone will drive your eye to this expensive focal point. A low cost option to replace stone on a modular home's exterior is vinyl siding designed to appear as natural stone.

Cement Siding

Cement siding has come of age and provides a super durable alternative to wood siding for homes. Cement siding can be installed in a modular home factory, however most factories would prefer to have cement siding installed on site.

Cement siding replicates the beauty of natural wood siding. Some of the styles available with cement siding include: clap board and board and batt siding. Cement siding requires paint to be installed after installation in most cases.

Composite Siding

Every new materials are being developed to improve a home's performance and durability. One composite material that could be installed in a modular home factory is SMART-SIDE. Smart side is composite sheathing with a fishished exterior finish.

Rain Screens

If you are considering siding your new modular home with wood or cement board, you should consider using a rain screen system. Rain screen systems help keep your home dry and therefore minimizing the need to paint exterior siding every few years.

An exterior wall with a rain screen can not be distinguished for a wall with the exterior finished to the sheathing of the home.

Many modernist modular homes use rain screens to add dimension using decorative plywood designs, cedar plans and corn crib siding systems.
