Design Basics

Storage Space Design

It is very important to take into consideration how much storage you will require in your new home. Often modular homes do not have adequate storage in their standard floor plans. Closets are poorly placed or they are non existant. A well designed home will offer ample storage beyond the bedrooms.

Bedroom Closets

After the kitchen and bathroom most home builders will look at the amount of closet space in the master bedroom. In the past a double closet was adequate and space was shared. Today, at least two double closets are desired in a master suite and more often than not a large walk in closet is demanded.

Additional Storage Spaces

In addition to bedroom closets, your floor plan will require storage for coats, food, towels and other stuff you want to keep out of sight. These storage areas are often over looked initially and then need to be crammed into the design process at the end. Most standard modular home floor plans do not offer well designed home storage. Linen closets are omitted or placed in hallways. Coat closets are omitted at heavily used back doors. Walk in Pantries waste valuable floor space. When designing your modular home floor plan you need to take time to consider how much stuff you need to store and where to locate the storage space.

Custom Closets

The rage in custom homes today is the practicality and the beauty of a custom closet system. Custom closets can easily double storage space in bedroom closets. If you are designing a small modular home, you should consider budgeting a custom closet space into your construction loan.

Garages

Often people will use their garages as storage space and not for their cars. Garages can be designed to offer additional storage space and still allow you to park your car inside. If you design better storage system inside your home, you could minimize or eliminate the garage as a storage hole. Many standard modular home floor plans show garages that are twenty by twenty feet. This allows little to no space to open a car door let alone store any thing. Size does matter with garages.

Storage Sheds

If your new home has a two car garage, you might consider building a pole barn or storage shed to store equipment and summer recreation items in the winter. Storage sheds have become more popular with homes shrinking in size. One of the best additions my parents made to their homes was a storage shed. This allows them to pare their car in the garage. For over thirty years our garage was a dumping ground. The storage shed offered enough space to organize and store stuff efficiently.
